Volunteer

Volunteers are the life blood of foodbanks. Your skills could be just what we need.

Volunteers are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of volunteers across the UK, helping The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. We want you to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis.

Here at the Dorking Area Foodbank we have an amazing set of volunteers, working together to get emergency food to those in crisis in our local community.

At the moment we have vacancies to volunteer in the following areas:

Warehouse Manager

This role is a great opportunity to get involved in the operational warehouse processes that are essential to support the great work of the foodbank.  We’re looking for someone who is organised, firm, responsible and has attention to detail.

We would need you to commit to, on average, about 4 hours per week.

There are a combination of routine, seasonal and ad hoc tasks which will be very manageable and of course fun for the right person.  It will include working one weekly warehouse session.

The warehouse manager is an important member of the foodbank team – your time and skills will be greatly appreciated.

We have a good-sized pool of dedicated volunteers available to ensure that our foodbank can open to welcome and support clients who visit us for emergency food parcels.

We would need you to commit to, on average, about 3-4 hours per week.

There are a combination of routine, seasonal and ad hoc volunteer co-ordination tasks which will be very manageable and of course fun for the right person.

Referral Agency Co-ordinator

We need strong relationships across a range of referral agencies.   These relationships are very much two way.  Agencies refer to us local people who require emergency food.  We also need agencies that we can point, or ‘signpost’, foodbank clients to for additional support.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the us with this.

Our foodbank works with a number of different referral agencies, such as Citizens Advice, children’s centres, schools, and health visitors.

Referral agencies provide vital support for our local community members in crisis.

The great work they do includes identifying the cause of crisis and offering practical guidance across many different types of issue.  They can also issue foodbank vouchers to local people in need of emergency food.

The role will include:

  • Twice a year, email each referral agency to thank them for working with us and to give them a referral voucher summary
  • Every three months, email each referral agency with a mini news update, a reminder of opening times, request any news/updates from them and to extend our thanks
  • Once a year, arrange a collective referral agency meeting
  • Reviewing our referral agencies to identify and fill any crisis support gaps

To apply for this opportunity, please email info@dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk

Fundraising Volunteer

From time to time we need to raise funds to support the work of our foodbank.  This may include raising money to offer a particular service to our clients, top up specific food items or other ad hoc running costs.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the us with this.

The role will include:

  • identifying fundraising opportunities
  • planning and co-ordinating fundraising events

To apply for this opportunity, please email info@dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk

Thank you volunteer

Generous, kind and compassionate – three words that describe our local community in the way that they support the Dorking Area Foodbank with their donations.  So, it’s really important that we show them our gratitude.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the us with this.

Unfortunately we will never be able to thank each and every person individually.  However, we would like to try to let as many of them as possible know how much we appreciate them.

The role will include sending thank you letters and emails:

  • on an ad hoc basis those who give us one off large donations
  • annually to churches and schools who donate their Annual Harvest to us
  • annually to supermarkets, churches and other locations with a Foodbank Collection Point

To apply for this opportunity, please email info@dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk

Prayer intention volunteer

The Dorking Area Foodbank is open to clients and volunteers of all faiths or none.  All are welcome.  However, as a Trussell Trust foodbank, we’re an anti-poverty project founded on Christian principles.  Indeed, setting up our foodbank in Dorking was an ecumenical Christian effort by members of Churches Together in Dorking and we need to remember the grace of God in our work.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the us with this.

The role will include sending emails to each local church:

  • every two / three months with a prayer intention to be shared as appropriate with their congregations
  • on an ad hoc basis when we feel there is a special request to call on God’s guiding hand in our project
  • annually with a short update on the project to keep in their prayers

To apply for this opportunity, please email info@dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk

Social committee volunteers

Our volunteers are amazing!  We can’t run the foodbank without them.  The time and skills that each and every one brings to our project is invaluable.

Social events are great opportunities for our hardworking volunteers to get together outside of their foodbank role to share similar interests, relax, catch up and get to know each other better.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the us with this.

The roles will include:

  • forming a social committee
  • working together to looking for ways and opportunities for our volunteers to get together outside of their foodbank role
  • emailing our volunteers with invitations to these events/”get togethers”

To apply for this opportunity, please email info@dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk

Warehouse Volunteers

  • We need help to weigh, sort and store donated food on a Monday or Wednesday session between 2 and 4pm. This is based at our local Dorking Warehouse.
  • We also need a volunteer to help out fortnightly at the weekly restock, again on a Monday afternoon between 1.55 and about 3pm. This will be assisting other volunteers moving quite a lot of food from our warehouse to our distribution centre, unpacking and restocking the shelves.

Distribution Centre Thursday Volunteers

We are looking for a couple of new volunteers to join our Thursday afternoon foodbank teams to work directly with people seeking the help of the foodbank. You would need to be available once or twice a month on a Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4.30pm.

Please get in touch if you are interested in any of these volunteering opportunities.

Thank you
