Give Help

Volunteer

Our recruitment is currently on hold.

Although the foodbank is still very much open, we are currently operating in a very different way.  At the moment we have the right amount of people in place to support our operations.  Of course, that can always change at any time. We will update this page when we are looking for volunteers again.  Thank you for your understanding….and future support!

Volunteers are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of volunteers across the UK, helping The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. We want you to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis.

Here at the Dorking Area Foodbank we have an amazing set of volunteers, working together to get emergency food to those in crisis in our local community.

At the moment we have vacancies to volunteer in the following areas:

Warehouse session leader

Our warehouse where all our donations are stored is open Monday 2pm-4pm and Wednesday 2pm-4pm so food donations can be weighed in and out. A session leader is someone who would oversee the session and the volunteers that day to ensure things run correctly and efficiently. Once a fortnight, ideally on Wednesdays, with the flexibility to also cover one of the other session leaders when they are on holiday. It is not difficult but would best suit a personable, confident and vigilant individual.

Holiday Hunger Volunteer

We run ‘holiday hunger’ outreach activities to help families who are going to struggle during school holidays when their children do not receive free school meals.

Three times a year, before the main school holidays. we hold a 1.5hr pop-up foodbank. Six times a year we supply holiday boost bags, which are large bags of food intended as a top-up.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us coordinate these activities. It is primarily a home-based role and you would not have to physically attend the pop-up or make up/distribute the boost bags.  It is not difficult but does require someone who is well organised, proactive and responsible. We have provided these services for some time so the process is well-established. You would need to be available in the run-up to the school holidays throughout the year.

Recruitment volunteer

Are you a friendly, responsible and confident person who likes working with people?  If so, could you help us to manage our volunteering enquiries?

The role will include:

  • responding to applicant queries
  • meeting with applicants to discuss our current volunteering opportunities and take them a simple recruitment process including a short interview
  • (optional) facilitate ad hoc induction training for new distribution centre volunteers.  This is supported with a DVD and training would be given

Referral Agency Co-ordinator

We need strong relationships across a range of referral agencies.   These relationships are very much two way.  Agencies refer to us local people who require emergency food.  We also need agencies that we can point, or ‘signpost’, foodbank clients to for additional support.

We are looking for a volunteer to support us with this.

Our foodbank works with a number of different referral agencies, such as Citizens Advice, children’s centres, schools, and health visitors.

Referral agencies provide vital support for our local community members in crisis.

The great work they do includes identifying the cause of the crisis and offering practical guidance across many different types of issue.  They can also issue foodbank vouchers to local people in need of emergency food.

The role will include:

  • Twice a year, email each referral agency to thank them for working with us and to give them a referral voucher summary
  • Every three months, email each referral agency with a mini news update, a reminder of opening times, request any news/updates from them and to extend our thanks
  • Once a year, arrange a collective referral agency meeting
  • Reviewing our referral agencies to identify and fill any crisis support gaps

Fundraising Volunteer

From time to time we need to raise funds to support the work of our foodbank.  This may include raising money to offer a particular service to our clients, top-up specific food items or other ad hoc running costs.

We are looking for a volunteer to support us with this.

The role will include:

  • identifying fundraising opportunities
  • planning and coordinating fundraising events

Thank you volunteer

Generous, kind and compassionate – three words that describe our local community in the way that they support the Dorking Area Foodbank with their donations.  So, it’s really important that we show them our gratitude.

We are looking for a volunteer to support us with this.

Unfortunately, we will never be able to thank each and every person individually.  However, we would like to try to let as many of them as possible know how much we appreciate them.

The role will include sending thank you letters and emails:

  • on an ad hoc basis those who give us one-off large donations
  • annually to churches and schools who donate their Annual Harvest to us
  • annually to supermarkets, churches and other locations with a Foodbank Collection Point

To apply for this opportunity, please email [email protected]

Prayer intention volunteer

The Dorking Area Foodbank is open to clients and volunteers of all faiths or none.  All are welcome.  However, as a Trussell Trust foodbank, we’re an anti-poverty project founded on Christian principles.  Indeed, setting up our foodbank in Dorking was an ecumenical Christian effort by members of Churches Together in Dorking and we need to remember the grace of God in our work.

We are looking for a volunteer to support us with this.

The role will include sending emails to each local church:

  • every two / three months with a prayer intention to be shared as appropriate with their congregations
  • on an ad hoc basis when we feel there is a special request to call on God’s guiding hand in our project
  • annually with a short update on the project to keep in their prayers

To apply for this opportunity, please email [email protected]

Warehouse Volunteers

We need help to weigh, sort and store donated food on a Monday or Wednesday session between 2 and 4pm. This is based at our local Dorking Warehouse.

Distribution Centre Volunteers

If you would like to join our teams who work directly with people seeking the help of the foodbank, please get in touch. You would need to be available once or twice a month on Tuesday afternoon between 4.15pm-6.30pm and/or on Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4.30pm and/or on Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4.30pm.

Please get in touch if you are interested in any of these volunteering opportunities.

Thank you
